Gee Bee Model "Z" PROCEDURES

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

[ ] Brakes -- TEST AND SET
(press CTRL+PERIOD key)

ENGINE START

Press CTRL+E to initiate engine autostart sequence, or:

[ ] Mixture -- RICH

[ ] Throttle -- CLOSED

[ ] Magneto Switch -- ON

[ ] Starter Switch -- ON (momentary)

Then:

[ ] Oil Pressure -- CHECK
[ ] Oil Temp -- CHECK

GROUND HANDLING

The Gee Bee "Z" is equipped with a fixed (non-steerable)
tail skid. As such, differential braking and the throttle are required for
successful ground manuevering.

[ ] Brakes -- Left Wheel (press F11)
Right Wheel (press F12)
[ ] Throttle -- Short bursts of power as required

BEFORE TAKEOFF
[ ] Canopy -- Closed and Locked
[ ] Belts and Harness -- On and Secured
[ ] Flight Controls -- FREE AND CORRECT
[ ] Trim -- Check and Set
[ ] Flight Instruments -- CHECK and SET
[ ] Oil Pressure -- CHECK
[ ] Oil Temp -- CHECK
[ ] Mixture -- RICH
[ ] Fuel Quantity -- CHECK
[ ] Magnetos -- CHECK
<175 RPM drop on each, <50 RPM drop between
(press M+MINUS key then M+PLUS key to L, R, L, Both)
[ ] PARK Brake -- RELEASE
(press PERIOD key)

TAKEOFF
Bear in mind the torque effect of the engine and prop
and avoid abrubt throttle inputs.

[ ] Mixture -- RICH (may be leaned above 3000')


[ ] Rudder -- HOLD FULL RIGHT (comes alive at 30 mph.,
above 20 kts. as required)

[ ] Throttle -- S - L - O - W - L - Y
ADD POWER UNTIL RUDDER BECOMES RESPONSIVE

[ ] Elevator Control -- (comes alive at 30 mph.)
tail should lift at around 60mph or gently push stick forward to raise tail
ealier.At this point you should be at no more than 50% throttle

[ ] Throttle -- S - L - O - W - L - Y
ADD FULL POWER At 100-120 mph. pull back and fly off the runway

CRUISE

[ ] Throttle -- AS DESIRED Long periods of full throttle will resault in Engine failure

[ ] Mixture -- LEAN

[ ] Elevator Trim -- ADJUST as needed

[ ] Oil Pressure -- CHECK
[ ] Oil Temp -- CHECK
[ ] Rpm -- CHECK

DESCENT

[ ] Throttle -- REDUCE to keep RPM under 2500

[ ] Mixture -- FULL RICH

[ ] Elevator Trim -- ADJUST

BEFORE LANDING

[ ] Mixture -- RICH

[ ] Airspeed -- 130 mph.

To improve vision over the engine cowling, it is best
to combine the base and final legs of the traffic pattern
into a gradual turn toward the runway. This keeps the
runway in sight for as long as possible.

LANDING
Keep your approaches semi-hot and flat until you develop
a feel for this aircraft
[ ] Airspeed -- 120 kts. on approach
110 kts. on final
[ ] Trim -- ADJUST

[ ] Touchdown--light jab on the brakes at the
exact moment the wheels touch will insure a NO-BOUNCE arrival.
[ ] Throttle -- IDLE

[ ] Braking -- MINIMUM REQUIRED
light jabs on brakes till speed under 30mph

SECURING AIRPLANE

[ ] Engine -- RUN for 1 Minute at 800 RPM

[ ] Throttle -- IDLE

[ ] Mixture -- IDLE CUT-OFF (pulled fully back)

[ ] Magneto Switch -- OFF
